  • Always have your camera with you and ready for action.
You'll never know when that great shot will present itself, and if you don't have your camera with you, you'll never get the shot.

  • ImageUse your cameras "picture" or "scene" mode.
If the kids are running around or playing sport then use the "sport" or "action" mode. If it's a portrait that your after then use the "portrait" mode.

  • Don't be afraid to use your flash outside.
This will help reduce the dark shadows that you get. especially around midday. Most cameras will have a "flash on" or "fill flash" mode.

  • If you are setting up a shot or trying to get a more formal photograph don't expect children to stay where you want them for more than 10 minutes or so.
Children will loose attention and get bored quickly and you will loose the chance to get the spontaneity that works so well in kids photographs. If things aren't working take a break for 10 or 15 minutes and then try again.. Remember, fresh is best!
